A tactical scope is a specific type of rifle scope that is designed for military and law enforcement use. It usually has a first focal point, which means that the reticle (or crosshairs) is located in the center of the lens.

This allows the shooter to quickly and easily aim the weapon at the target. ARORY tactical scopes include a sun shield to protect the lens from the sun’s glare and are fog proof to prevent the lenses from fogging up in humid or wet weather. ARORY scopes also include zero stop and MOA features that help quickly and accurately sight in whatever you are shooting at.

What does MOA actually mean?

This is something I wondered back in the day when I first started getting into hunting. MOA actually means “minute of angle” strange right? MOA is a unit of angular measurement; one MOA is about 100 yards. The graph below should help illustrate this.

MOA

Rifle Scope MOA Yardage
So for example, if you are shooting at a target 400 yds away. We now know that 400 yds = 4 MOA (see graph)

The way I like to calculate MOA adjustment is like this: Divide the distance you’re firing (in yards) by 100 to find out how large 1 MOA is in inches. So let’s say you are 350 yds away, (350/100=3.5) so 1 MOA at 350 yds is 3.5” so, If you fire at a target 350 yds away and hit the target 3.5” low or high, then you know you need to adjust your aim by 1 MOA.

Knowing how to do this will save you time and wasted bullets. I remember when I purchased my first scope, I would just guesstimate the number of MOA until I eventually got it right. Lots of ammunition wasted. So, take 5-10 minutes and learn how MOA works.

How to use a first focal point scope and what is it?

First focal point scopes (FFPS) or sometimes referred to as “front focal point” scopes are usually a little pricier and come in either “semi-magnified” or “full magnification.” The difference between the two is whether or not the reticle is magnified.

The main thing you should know about FFPS is the recitals grow and shrink at the same rate as the target when you adjust the magnification.

As you can see above, the reticle gets bigger as the magnification increases and smaller as it decreases.

Zero Stop Scopes – Why you need one

Zero stop is one of the first things I look for when buying a new scope. It makes resetting your scope super easy.

For those who are not quite sure what zero stop does let me briefly explain: For example, say your desired shooting range is 100 yds and as such you already dialed in your new scope to hit dead center every time at 100 yds. Now imagine you are out hunting and need to adjust your scope to hit a target at 250 yds. Once you set your scope for 250 yds and shoot, you can easily reset your scope back to that EXACT 100-yard optimal range thanks to zero stop.

So next time you are out at the range feel free to turn the dials any way to want to focus in and out on a target. Zero stop will help you dial it back to that sweet spot.
